Discovery and Appreciation

Each child is tuneful, beautiful and artful. Through music experiences, Sunny Hollow Montessori engages toddlers through middle school students in a variety of performance, music appreciation and demonstration of their learning.

Every child has music class weekly.

Music Discovery

Toddlers engage in a repertoire of songs combined with oral storytelling in the American folk tradition. Taught in bite-sized lessons, toddlers and preschoolers gain a comfort level with singing that they can share with their families.

Integrated Appreciation

Beginning in first grade and on through eighth grade, we engage the students in the Orff Schulwerk method of music education that combines music, movement, speech and drama into one integrated experience.

Children imitate and co-create their lessons and label what they’ve learned to build a reinforcing and cohesive understanding.

Music Reading & Performance

Beginning in fourth grade, students learn basic instrumental performance and music reading with the recorder. This practice supports literacy, rhythm and overall music appreciation while performing alone or in a group.

In the winter, all students engage in a performance for friends and family that demonstrates their musical, kinesthetic, vocal and theatrical skills.

With music as a vital part of Sunny Hollow curriculum, we encourage students to go on to study choral, instrumental and other musical pursuits through further schooling and life opportunities. Some students take private vocal and instrumental lessons or sign up for enrichment opportunities through community partners such as MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis.
