Who is a Sunny Hollow Graduate?

Every school will tell you what your child will learn. Fewer can tell you who your child will become.

At Sunny Hollow Montessori, we asked ourselves that question directly, and we spent real time answering it. The result is our Portrait of a Sunny Hollow Montessori Graduate: seven traits that describe who a Sunny Hollow education prepares your child to become, from our youngest 16-month-olds through 8th grade.

This isn’t a mission statement or a marketing promise. It’s a working description of the habits of mind, character, and capability our students carry with them: rigorous academic preparation, real confidence, true independence, and a strong sense of who they are. It’s what our teachers (we call them “guides”)  aim for in the classroom every day, and what our families tell us they see show up at home.

Sunny Hollow graduates are prepared not just for the next stage of school, but for a lifetime of learning. They read, write, listen, and collaborate with care and intention, using these skills to deepen their understanding and communicate their ideas clearly.

Their learning is active and grounded in experience. They ask questions, explore, and make meaning through direct engagement with the world around them. In their early years, this work happens largely without screens, allowing for focus, curiosity, and connection. As they grow, they begin to use technology as a tool—thoughtfully and purposefully—for research, writing, and the sharing of ideas.

They leave with a strong academic foundation, but more importantly, with the habits of mind that allow them to continue learning long after they leave Sunny Hollow.

This independence is not about doing everything alone. It is built over time through practice, guidance, and trust.

This steady confidence has grown over time, nurtured through experience and reflection.They have been given the space to try things out, to make mistakes, and to try again. Through this process, they come to understand that they are capable of working through challenges, solving problems, and contributing meaningfully to a group.

They are comfortable being themselves in a variety of settings. They know how to listen, how to collaborate, and how to share their ideas with clarity and respect. When opportunities for leadership arise, they step forward with a sense of responsibility, not because they are asked to perform, but because they feel ready.

From an early age, they are invited to care for their environment, to support one another, and to contribute in ways that are both small and significant. These daily experiences help them develop a sense of empathy, responsibility, and mutual respect. 

They learn to work alongside others—to listen, to collaborate, and to navigate differences with thoughtfulness. They begin to recognize their own perspectives, while also growing in their ability to understand the experiences of others.

This experience builds a sense of trust in themselves that they can begin, continue, and complete meaningful work.
